Fall 2016 Has Arrived

Every year August seems to roll around faster and faster. This year is no different. Unbelievably, students will be back at CI and classrooms will be buzzing in a few days. This is the time that of year that faculty put their heads down and work diligently to prepare classes for the students coming their way. In a few weeks campus will settled into a more regular routine. I find it is during this settling period that many faculty reflect on their teaching practice and yearn to connect with colleagues to share successes and struggles.

Teaching and Learning Innovations has a robust array of opportunities to keep you connected with peers and continue to reflect on and improve your teaching. Here are a few opportunities to consider for Fall 2016!

T&LI’s core offerings are back once again this semester, but have been rebranded Pathways!  Our Pathways model provides you with flexible options to support the development or improvement of your online and blended classes.  Choose from the Online Teaching Preparation Program (OTPP), Blended Learning Preparation Program (BLPP), a variety of Course Construction workshops, monthly gatherings for our Online & Blended Learning and VoiceThreader Faculty Communities, or our two Quality Efforts (Course Feedback and QOLT ePortfolio). Design your Fall 2016 Pathway now!

Based upon data from select CI programs (Biology, Psychology, History) during Spring 2016, it is estimated that textbook costs for a baccalaureate degree can cost students between $1165 – $5788 depending upon the program and textbooks selected by faculty. This semester, CI, along with other CSU campuses and California Community Colleges, will launch a concerted effort to reduce the amount of money students spend on textbooks by encouraging faculty to consider adopting Open Educational Resources (OERs). OpenCI, will be led by CI faculty, Jaime Hannans and Jacob Jenkins. Jaime and Jacob will be facilitating two workshops in the FIT Studio this semester (8/31 at 12:30pm and 9/6 at 9:00am) to inform faculty about the variety of OERs available.

Faculty Writing Connection

Each Thursday from 2:00-4:00 in the FIT Studio, you are invited to join your peers for inspiration and support with your writing projects. This is an excellent opportunity to get to work on that idea you’ve been pondering for a journal article or finish that chapter you started last year. Set your goals and sign up to participate in the Faculty Writing Connection today! The Faculty Writing Connection will be facilitated by our new Interim Faculty Development Coordinator, Julia Balén.
