Remember View-Masters? That was as close as I got to Virtual or Augmented reality as a kid. Have you checked out a View-Master lately? It’s come a long way from cardboard disks. The 2018 model allows viewers to explore the Statue of Liberty or fight crime with the Nija Turtles, all from the comfort of the family sofa. These immersive experiences are made possible through virtual reality technology, all for $30 or less.
Too bad they don’t make a View-Master that lets students explore the cardiovascular system or simulate an experiment before actually handling chemicals – right? Wouldn’t it be great if our Nursing students could explore an Emergency Room before entering a real one? Or what if our Preservice-teachers could teach a lesson to children before stepping into an actual classroom?
Well, they can! And they are, right here at CSUCI! Partnering with Teaching and Learning Innovations, several of our faculty from Nursing, The School of Education, Business, and Environmental Science are using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to create authentic learning experiences for students without leaving the classroom (on ground or online).
Virtual Reality, in tandem with instructor support, is being leveraged in multiple programs at CI to provide opportunities for students to apply and practice course content in a ‘low-stakes’ simulations where mistakes can be made, procedures paused and replayed, and time can literally ‘stop’ for introspection and reflection.
This Friday, February 9th, your colleagues will be showcasing their work a the 2018 Immersive Learning Open House in the FIT Studio, located in 1201 Solano Hall, from 9:00 to Noon. Come checkout the work being done, sample the technology, and find out how you can get involved!
