Faculty Development Coordinator
Dr. Julia “Jules” Balén, was thrilled to be in on the early stages of developing a campus for the 21st century when signing the CI contract in 2003. Having participated in developing a number of programs (Sociology, Chicano/a Studies, Philosophy, and Freedom and Justice Studies) and three of the four mission centers, Jules served as the Faculty Director of the Center for Multicultural Engagement from its inception in 2005 till 2015 and has been active in developing faculty, staff, and student workshops to increase multicultural understandings throughout campus culture. More recently, through Projects ISLAS and ALAS (HSI Initiative grants) Jules has been developing workshops to help faculty engage students more effectively in their own learning processes. Having “done my career backwards,” Jules knows the pitfalls and loves mentoring faculty to save them from unnecessary suffering as much as teaching and mentoring students.
